CHAPTER 3

In your hutch, Harry Stevenson

Billy carefully marked the date of the party on his Sparky FC calendar, and Harry watched him tick off each day as the party got closer. It was on the same day as a huge match between the Sparks and their rivals, Scratchy United (also known as ‘the Scratchies’). Billy had been desperate to go, but the tickets cost a lot of money. Mr Smith said that they could watch it on TV instead, after the party.

Mr Smith loved a party, so he quickly got to work on planning Billy’s. Every few days, he’d set off in his scruffy old van and come home with something special for the big event. Harry watched as he proudly showed off a paddling pool, some Sparky FC plastic plates and a huge bag of helium balloons with a can of gas to inflate them. Everything he’d found came from a second-hand shop or a friend’s home, which made him even prouder. Then one day there was something for Harry too.

‘That guinea pig of yours is getting a bit porky,’ said Mr Smith.

Harry looked up from his nugget bowl with a start! He wasn’t sure what ‘porky’ meant – but, from the way Mr Smith was gazing at him, he could tell it wasn’t flattering.

‘Harry could do with some fresh air and a run around,’ said Mr Smith. ‘Come and see what I’ve found!’

Billy and Harry watched from the open window as Mr Smith went out to the van, flung open the back doors and bowed deeply as he revealed what was inside. Ta–da!!! It was a beautiful wooden hutch with a wire run.

‘There you go, son!’ beamed Mr Smith. ‘Harry can go outside now. He’ll be so happy!’

‘Happy’ perhaps wasn’t the best word to describe Harry Stevenson when he saw that hutch. ‘Worried’ might be better – or even ‘terrified’. Until very recently, Harry had never been outside and in fact had doubted that there really was such a place. It was only on moving day that Harry had left the old flat – and what an experience that had been. Weird things happened outside, thought Harry. It was no place for him!
